The 500 Series 7000 sub-class was refurbished for the Kodama service between Shin-Osaka and Hakata starting in 2008, operating in a shortened 8-car formation. From autumn 2015 to March 2017, one set featured special wrapping as part of the Shinkansen: Evangelion Project.
