The 103 Series commuter train was a Japanese National Railways commuter train, with prototype cars introduced in 1963 and mass production commencing in 1964. Initially deployed on the Yamanote Line, the 103 Series featured a low driver's cab and was not equipped with air conditioning. However, as driving technologies advanced, the corresponding specifications of the series were modified, and new trains of the same series were introduced multiple times on the Yamanote Line.
Eventually, the Yamanote Line was almost completely standardized with the latest model trains that had a high driver's cab and air conditioning units, although long-term replacements and rearrangements led to many intermediate cars without air conditioning from the early series being coupled into some formations. Beginning in 1984, the 205 Series was introduced, and with the subsequent opening of the Saikyo Line the following year, the 103 Series was redeployed. It could be seen on the Yamanote Line until 1988 and on the Saikyo Line until 1990. The Uguisu-colored 103 Series featuring high driver's cab cars from the early non-air conditioned series also operated on the Yokohama Line, in addition to the Yamanote and Saikyo Lines.
