The 205 series is a commuter train that began operations in 1985. The 205 Series 2nd batch vehicles were introduced in 1985 as the first mass-produced models during the late JNR period. This group features a design change from double-hung windows to single descending windows compared to the 1st batch vehicles. The 2nd batch includes configurations from the 5th to the 22nd set, characterized by the alternating arrangement of the boarding steps, a feature that was changed to a vertical two-row configuration in subsequent 3rd batch vehicles.
At the time of introduction, all MOHA204 models were equipped with BLMG, but the BLMG of the 5th car's MOHA204 model was later removed because the power supply capacity was sufficient with two cars in the formation. The removed BLMG was reallocated to additional MOHA204 models. Later, as a measure to alleviate congestion, the SAHA204 model with six doors was added to the formation, changing it from 10 to 11 cars. After its success on the Yamanote Line, it was modified for transfer from 2002 to replace older cars on other lines.
