Originally designed as a figure meant to challenge the traditional ideals of Japanese women, Rei Ayanami is a fan favorite. Rei Ayanami is the First Child and Pilot of the Evangelion Unit-00 chosen to defeat the Angels. While seemingly stoic and antisocial at first introduction, Rei eventually opens up developing relationships and befriending her classmate and fellow pilot, Shinji Ikari, of Evangelion Unit-01. After a socially detached and mysterious start, her character’s emotional development eventually leads her to bravely sacrifice her life to destroy Armisael.
