Frequently Asked Questions

Want to learn more about N scale layout or kits? Check out the FAQ below.

Should I buy individual parts or a kit?

If you’re a newcomer to model train building or want to simplify the parts-sourcing process, a kit might be a good choice for your build. But, if you’re looking for more customization, sourcing individual parts might help you reach your specific build goals.

What’s the ratio for N scale?

N scale is just over half the size of HO scale — 1:160. So, you’d have to line up 160 model cars to reach the length of one real-life car. Many builders choose N scale for its relatively small size. It’s an excellent choice for building an environment with limited space or a complex layout.

What’s the gauge for N scale?

While N scale tracks come in standard and narrow sizes, the gauges are the same for both: 9mm. The “N” in N scale stands for nine. Before choosing a track product or other rail-mounted accessories, make sure that your gauge and size are compatible with your other environmental elements.

What do I need to build a model train track?

At a minimum, you’ll need the train itself (cars and engine), electrical wiring, a track, and a foundation surface (like a table or the floor). But, if you want to create an immersive, lifelike model train environment, you should consider picking up (or making) some terrain features, bridges, tunnels, lights, and structures. All of these elements are paramount to creating a rich miniature world.
