What’s the difference between Z scale and Z gauge?

In the model train community, people often use the terms “scale” and “gauge” interchangeably. They’re actually different, but most new model train collectors don’t know that. “Z scale” refers to the entire scale: structures, trains, rails, etc. “Z gauge” refers specifically to the tracks. Read product descriptions carefully to make sure your product of choice is compatible with your train and environment.

What size is Z scale track?

Z scale tracks have a gauge size of 6.5 mm/0.256 in. Z scale cars feature a 1:220 scale, meaning that it would take 220 model cars to reach the length of one real-life car.

What scale is LEGO® track?

LEGO® tracks are proprietary and feature a 1:38 scale. It’s important to note that LEGO® tracks aren’t compatible with Z scale products.

What’s the difference between Z scale and N scale?

Z scale trains feature a 1:220 scale ratio while N scale trains feature a 1:160 scale ratio. N scale trains and features are larger than Z scale. However, they’re both excellent choices for builders with limited space.
