Line-Defining Figuarts Releases

The original 2011 Super Saiyan Goku is something of a holy grail for collectors, to borrow TCG terminology. Finding one of these in good condition in its original box is next to impossible unless you’re in Japan.

On the more recent end, you’ve got releases like Ultra Instinct Goku (shown above), the Jiren figure from the Tournament of Power arc. You also can’t go wrong with classics like Vegeta, Piccolo, and Frieza. All three of these have gotten significant revisions, with the latest being the Figuarts 2.0 sculpts, which fixed tons of proportion issues and sharpened the paintwork.

Banpresto Prize Figures

Banpresto figures were originally designed for Dragon Ball collectors as prizes for arcade crane games in Japan. There used to be a popular misconception that prize figures were ‘cheap’, but that hasn’t been true for a while now. Several Banpresto lines deliver top-tier sculpt quality that’s more than worth the price tag.

Banpreso Sub-Lines

Grandista figures are incredibly popular, especially the Manga Dimensions variant of Super Saiyan Blue Goku. These are oversized and highly detailed, rendered entirely in black, white, and grey to mimic manga panels. Right now, this is one of the most visually striking Dragon Ball figures at any price point.

Other popular collectors' favorites include Banpresto’s Resolution of Soldiers. The Vegeta from this line is a common pick for its intense pose. Both of these sub-lines are priced between $20 and $40, making them easy choices if you’re looking for something affordable.

Ichiban Kuji Figures

These figures are one of the most interesting on the market for one simple reason: you can’t just walk into a store to buy them. Ichiban Kuji works entirely on a lottery system. You’ll have to purchase a ticket at a participating store, and your ticket will correspond to a prize tier. Top prizes are marked A and B, since they’re unavailable through any other retail channel.

The holy grail for Dragon Ball collectors here is the ‘Last One’ prize, which is awarded to whoever buys the final ticket in any given lot. Unlike your typical plush toy or keychain, these are unique color variants, and only one of them exists in every retail location.

MegaHouse: Dimension of Dragon Ball

Not every collector will care about articulation. Sometimes, the goal is just to have a figure that looks museum-worthy, sitting on a carefully curated shelf.

That’s exactly where MegaHouse shines. Their Dimension of Dragon Ball series shows off your favorite characters at their best, whether that’s Goku meditating with a smile or Piccolo readying himself for another bout. These pieces feature excellent attention to detail for the price point and come in a variety of sizes.

Pokémon recently celebrated 30 magical years of a timeless story that started in 1996. The franchise that started with Pocket Monsters Red and Green began on the very first Game Boy and has evolved into many iterations over the decades. What started as a passionate project by a young game designer has taken over to redefine gaming, anime, trading cards, movies, and countless other media.

The Spark

If you’re a Nintendo fan, you’re likely familiar with names like Shigeru Miyamoto. This Pokémon 30th anniversary event, however, is about another Japanese visionary who has seemingly flown under the radar compared to his contemporaries.

Satoshi Tajiri created Pokémon out of a passion for exploring nature, discovering new creatures, and learning their habits. As a young programmer, the sight of two Game Boys connected by a link cable sparked the idea of creatures ‘crawling’ between devices, much like bugs.

Origins at Game Freak

Together with his magazine-turned-game company, Game Freak, and artist Ken Sugimori, Tajiri spent six years developing the concept that would become Pokémon. With support from Nintendo, Pocket Monsters Red was released on February 27, 1996.

A Phenomenon is Born

Pokémon’s 30th year anniversary celebrates the first two Game Boy cartridges that created the timeless Kanto region and the original 151 Pokémon, along with the core loop that defines the series even today: Explore, battle, catch, and befriend.

The TCG Begins

1996 didn’t just mark the origins of the game series but also of the TCG. The Pokémon TCG was released just about 8 months after Pocket Monsters Red, in October 1996. This kicked off another incredible collectible explosion that would soon conquer the globe.

In that sense, Pokémon’s 30th year anniversary also celebrates the incredible legacy of a peerless TCG. From Scarlet and Violet to Nihil Zero, Pokémon stores have seen unceasing demand, driven by expansions that consistently push the envelope.

The Pokémon TV and Media Kickoff

Not too long after the debut of the TCG, the world would see the much-hyped premiere of the Pokémon anime series in 1997 on TV Tokyo. Series protagonist Ash Ketchum (aka Satoshi in Japan) and Pikachu turned into household names virtually overnight, clashing with Team Rocket and joined by Misty and Brock for their weekly antics.

1998 saw the TV show followed up by the very first Pokémon movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. The movie premiere was combined with the launch of real-life Pokémon Centers across Japan. These were dedicated stores packed with exclusive video game merch.

Pokémon Goes Global

If you’re just learning about the Pokémon 30th year anniversary right now, you might not have known that Pokémon Red and Blue weren’t actually released internationally until 1998. However, it wasn’t long after that when the series became a true global juggernaut, selling millions of copies and inspiring everything from lunchboxes to cereal.

New Gen Pokémon

New generations of Pokémon rolled out steadily over the next decade. Game Freak created new worlds, ranging from:

Johto in Gold and Silver (1999)

Hoenn in Ruby and Sapphire (2002)

Sinnoh in Platinum and Diamond (2006)

Each new region was hotly anticipated by fans everywhere, introducing hundreds of new Pokémon designs and innovative mechanics like double battles (shoutout Ruby!). If you’ve celebrated this Pokémon 30th year anniversary, you’ve likely already explored one of these regions to completion.

Yet, no matter how far the series has traveled, its roots are still firmly grounded in brilliant creature designs and a heartfelt emphasis on growth and friendship.

30 Years of Pokémon TCG

The TCG has rightly earned its own place in the spotlight in this anniversary year. Alongside the anime merch, the TCG has played a massive role in maintaining the series’ popularity among older fans who might not actively engage with the show or even the games.

The Pokémon Company is rewarding TCG fans with special Holo Mewtwo, Mew, and Pikachu cards in select packs, a 30th Anniversary Premium Deck Set, and Japan-exclusive packs containing ultra-rare pulls.

Maomao

Maomao is the sharp-witted, fearless protagonist leading the anime. Maomao is a former girl from the red-light district armed to the teeth with an encyclopedic knowledge of poisons, herbs, and medicines.

She now serves as a lowly palace maid, but there’s so much more to Maomao than meets the eye.

Maomao’s Mysteries

If you own a Maomao anime figure, it’s probably because of her incredible underdog story. After getting kidnapped and forced to serve in the Imperial Palace, Maomao earns the honor of being a poison-tester for Gyokuyo, the consort.

Her vast knowledge of herbs helps her climb rapidly, eventually becoming a sort of unofficial detective with an eerie passion for poison.

Jinshi

Jinshi is the stunning, high-ranking overseer of the Rear Palace who’s had light novel readers spellbound since his debut. As a graceful eunuch with a lot on his plate, he’s always dragging Maomao into palace problems with a smile you can’t help but love.

The Four Consorts

The four consorts are the real power players of the Rear Palace. These ladies essentially rule the women’s quarters, and each represents a vital facet of palace life. Maomao has her work cut out for her if she wants the favor of these four.

Consort Gyokuyou

Gyokuyou might be the precious consort of the palace and the Emperor’s favorite, but she doesn’t let that get to her head. She’s the rare warm and friendly face in a court where everyone has a dagger at their backs. Gyokuyou instantly takes to Maomao and is her biggest supporter on the show.

The biggest thing you need to know about Gyokuyou? She’s the voice of reason among the consorts and fiercely protective of the few she trusts.

Consort Lihua

If Gyokuyou is sunny and bright, Lihua is the calm and proud counterbalance. The proud and endlessly elegant Eastern Consort is initially haughty and distrustful of Maomao, protective of her position.

However, the real fun here is watching Lihua grow and learn the value of humility through hardship.

Consort Lishu

Lishu is the shy Southern Consort whose anime merchandise adorns shelves everywhere. Why? She’s adorable and works as a quiet but kind force in the palace. It only remains to be seen whether she can grow to fight off all that bullying in court.

Consort Ah-Duo

Ah-Duo was the former Pure Consort of the Garnet Pavilion. Her story is among the most interesting of the four consorts. She’s bold, experienced, and takes no-nonsense with the ability to see through all the palace facades better than most.

Key Supporting Characters

Gaoshun and Basen

Gaoshun is Jinshi’s loyal attendant and keeps the court running. Notably, he used to be the Emperor’s attendant before becoming Jinshi’s attendant. His son, Basen, is all business on the surface but also serves as the comic relief.

Anshi

Anshi is the mother of the emperor and the widow of the former emperor. That background makes her a pitiable figure in court politics, something she is all too happy to use to her advantage. She’s quietly calculating and will do whatever it takes to maintain her power in court.

The Emperor

The emperor plays second fiddle to the more colorful cast on his own court. He strikes a quiet, reserved figure and is determined not to repeat his father's mistakes.

Loulan

Loulan is one of the most interesting characters on the show, and you probably already own some Apothecary Diaries merch featuring her striking design. She’s the current Pure Consort of the Garnet Pavilion with a seemingly emotionless demeanor.

Don’t let that fool you! There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface with Loulan, and it’s clear she has her own designs in motion.

Fengxian

Fengxian is Maomao’s biological mother and was once a high-ranking courtesan. She’s described as being proud and powerful before she contracted a disease that rendered her bedridden.

14. Pachirisu’s name is a mix of a Japanese word (Risu) and onomatopoeia (Pachi Pachi).

“Pachi Pachi” is the sound for electric crackling, while “Risu” means squirrel in Japanese.

15. Pikachu’s back stripes don’t originate from anything specifically.

Nishida felt that because the player sees the back of their Pokemon when they go into battle, Pikachu’s back would be “lonely” without anything on it.

The wait is finally over! Fans wondering where to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 finally got to see the opening of the infamous Culling Arc with the Crunchyroll premiere on January 8, 2026.

A lot has already happened, and if you’re anything like us, you’re probably wondering how many episodes there are in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3. Plaza Japan has you covered.

What Will Happen in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3?

The hype train has arrived. Season 3 takes place immediately after what can only be called the traumatic Shibuya Arc. Tokyo is overrun with curses, and Yuji is training as hard as he can with the gang, preparing ceaselessly for Kenjaku’s terrifying Culling Game.

What We’ve Seen So Far

If you know where to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, you’ll already know we’ve blasted through Itadori’s Extermination and Perfect Preparation from the manga. We’ve also seen:

Yuji and Megumi are heading to Tokyo Colony No.1

Wild new sorcerers like Higuruma are being recruited

MAPPA’s doing what they do best this season, and the best is yet to come.

Manga vs. Anime Changes So Far

Overall, the anime adaptation for the Culling Arc has so far been fairly faithful. There are a couple of incredibly smart upgrades as well!

If you’re someone who collects Jujutsu Kaisen action figures as a fan of the fights in the show, you’ll be happy to know that MAPPA kept the frantic pacing of the manga fights and made them even weightier compared to last season.

Fight Enhancements

The rapid paneling in the manga has been translated smoothly through the anime’s extended choreography, and the sakuga bursts you know and love. No episode so far has showcased that better than episode 8. Higuruma fans, eat your heart out.

Considering how many episodes there are in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 (12 for part 1!), there are a ton of great fights left to look forward to.

Pacing Tweaks

The biggest change so far has been the speedier introduction of Higuruma’s much-awaited domain debut and early colony skirmishes.

The jigsaw puzzle-like, exposition-heavy sections introducing the Culling Game rules have been polished and reordered for smoother flow.

Character Moments

Backstories (such as for Hikari) have been slightly trimmed for pacing and emotional impact.

If you know where to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 and collect a ton of anime merchandise, you’ll be happy to hear that Maki’s enhanced brutality and Higuruma’s signature disillusionment carry over from the manga.

What Comes Next?

What will happen next in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 depends entirely on the pacing, with the final episode set for March 26, 2026. The Culling Games are set to truly ignite as we head into the final stretch of the season.

Colony No.1 Deep Dive

The next few episodes (9-10) will likely wrap up with the Higuruma confrontation and give us more insight into his domain expansion’s deadly abilities. Our prediction? You’re going to see a lot of Judgeman plush toys in the coming months, given how incredible his design is.

New Players

You can look forward to seeing episodes 10 and 11 introduce new players into the mix. Yuta’s legendary Sendai brawl from the manga will be an unmissable event in the anime, considering how many episodes are left in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3.

Part 1 Finale Set Up

Remember that this is just part 1 of the Culling Games! MAPPA hasn’t announced a release date for part 2 yet, but it will most likely hit Crunchyroll sometime in October 2026.

You can expect the finale to set up a Sendai Colony cliffhanger or an Angel encounter as a bridge towards part 2.

Will Season 3 Change The Manga?

If you know where to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, you’re probably aware that any major changes are unlikely. The studio has been immensely faithful to the manga so far, other than a few pacing concerns early on, and we expect that to continue.

Don’t Miss The Ride

What happens next in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 is bound to be a rollercoaster if the episodes so far are any indication. Settle in for the ride with your favorite Japanese snacks, authentic action figures, and more fun merch only at Plaza Japan.
Frequently Asked Questions

You can watch the new season easily on Crunchyroll or through their partnership with Prime Video. Other options may also be available depending on your region.

How many episodes are in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3?

Part 1 of the season is slated for 12 episodes, with the finale releasing on March 26, 2026. So far, there has been no official announcement regarding the dates or episode counts for part 2. It will, however, most likely also end with 12 episodes.

Does season 3 change anything from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga?

So far, there have been no major plot rewrites from the manga. Any changes, however minor, have been made to improve emotional character moments (such as Yuji talking about Gojo being sealed). If you know where to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, you can see it for yourself!

Key Takeaways:

There are some brand new anime shows in winter 2026, as well as some long-awaited continuations of fan favorites!

Enjoy everything from dark psychological thrillers to heartwarming romcoms this year

2026 winter anime starts the year off strong, with even more to look forward to in the seasons to come

As we can attest, 2025 was a stellar year for anime, and winter 2026 began with new installments of Frieren and My Hero Academia. This is the year of the horse, after all, and if the wild success of Umamusume is any indication, the new anime shows for 2026 are starting at the gates as true winners.

Whether it's a long-awaited update or a delightful discovery, there are thrilling shows for every kind of fan, from romance to isekai adventure. Take a look at some of the winter 2026 anime that we’re most excited about, and make sure to cast your vote for your favorites below!

Jujutsu Kaisen: Season 3

2026 winter anime means new seasons of fan favorites we can’t wait to continue, even if that means starting with a little bit of culling. Jujutsu Kaisen starts the year with explosive action and a battle royale fight to the death.

Expect more epic fight scenes that will make the Shibuya Incident look small by comparison. What will happen to Yuji, or Choso, for that matter? We can’t quite put a finger on it, but there’s definitely something sorcerous going on.

That means there’s only one way to find out (or two, since the manga is also available!)

Hell’s Paradise: Season 2

Hell’s Paradise, or Jigokuraku, is been keeping us on the edge of our seats; we are so glad that this winter 2026, we finally get more of the anime with some of the most stunning animation we’ve seen. Season 1 of Hell’s Paradise aired back in the spring of 2023, and it’s felt like an eternity since that mind-bending cliffhanger last season.

By the end of its fantastic and fantastical first season, our flawed hero, Gabimaru, is stuck on the island Shinsenkyo, battling demons and beginning to question his own reality. Ironically, “Shinsenkyo” means “divine paradise,” but his own experiences were the opposite of idyllic. After all, it wasn’t like Gabimaru exactly wanted to be escorted around by the executioner Sagiri in a “do or die” mission.

Just as ironically, Gabimaru was searching for a mythical flower to prolong the emperor’s life, when all he wanted to do was stop living his. By the end of Season 1, he was questioning the very reality of that life.

Good thing we don’t need any special elixir to hold out any longer! Hell’s Paradise is an absolute must-watch anime for the winter of 2026.

Oshi No Ko: Season 3

Oshi No Ko continues its anime this 2026 winter with its newest season, and we are very starry-eyed about it all! Just like its first two seasons, Oshi No Ko continues the saga of the highest highs and the lowest lows of the J-Pop scene. Just like the stars of the series, this anime has a complicated background: it's part kawaii, part psychological thriller, and definitely a murder mystery tied up with a neat little baby bow (or two).

Here, we continue to unravel the mystery behind Ai Hoshino, a murdered pop star and mother of twins who themselves are more than who they appear to be. That’s because twins Aquamarine or “Acqua,” and twin Ruby, are not just her children, but also reincarnated fans who hold clues to the suspicious actions that led to her murder. Oh, and they also happen to be major singers and actors, respectively!

What happens next in this new winter anime installation for 2026 is a series of plot twists, with plenty of twisted emotions and motives along the way.

Sentenced to Be a Hero

Old classics and updates to your favorites are never “out,” but what if you’re looking for more “in with the new” for the new year? Winter 2026’s lineup of anime debuts is exhilarating, and one that comes to mind is “Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004.”

Xylo Forbatz, the literal hero of this story, isn’t just any begrudging hero. Like Gabimaru, he has this annoying habit of continuing to survive when he’d rather not. Unlike Gabimaru, his immortality isn’t in question: Xylo was forced to become immortal because he, well, technically killed an immortal being, and must spend an eternity atoning for it.

As the audience, and as fans of Japanese RPGs, we know that the power of friendship is the best power there is when it comes to killing gods, but not without something mind-blowing happening along the way. Discover Xylo’s own epic journey and who he meets along the way, with this anime, new to winter 2026!

Hana-Kimi

Romcom fans, rejoice! If you’re looking to stay warm in the winter with a new anime that’s all about love, then 2026 is totally your year. Hana Kimi is a cute shojo story about a fan named Ashiya Mizuki who falls head over heels for a track star named Sano Izumi. She might say she’s in it for the long run herself: she disguises herself as a boy to attend his all-boys school!

Get ready to laugh while leaning into the awkwardness of high school romance, and plenty of plays on words that show that love can bloom all around, anywhere in the world, and at any time.

Key Takeaways:

Anime is more popular than ever, meaning it was hard to pick just one title for the best anime of 2025!

We share some of our favorites from popular anime in 2025, from new releases, continuations, and fond farewells

What do you think? Take our poll!

2025 was one of the best years for anime yet, and it speaks volumes about its growing fan base. The increase in viewers who love Japanese storytelling and animation has led to larger budgets for more studios and talent, more innovative artistry, and a wider range of genres and complex themes. That also means we had a very good problem on our hands: choosing the best anime of 2025!

Because this is a big decision, we’re going to need your help. Our recap includes shout-outs to beloved series that ended this year, along with a showcase of some of 2025’s new and continuing popular anime, giving plenty to look forward to. Whether it’s encouragement to begin that show on your watchlist or inspiration to hit rewatch, read on for a recap of our favorites from 2025 and your chance to weigh in!

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is definitely the best anime movie of 2025. It reigned supreme at the box office throughout Japan and the world, setting new records while clinching a Golden Globe nomination. Its international recognition shows how much the world can’t get enough of the artistic and philosophical adventures set in Taisho-era Japan and that feature traditional Japanese folklore.

Demon Slayer takes us on the journey of Tanjiro Kamado and his fellow Hashira, or the highest-ranking members of the Demon Slayer Corps. Tanjiro began Season One as a young, grieving boy who sought to avenge his family and protect his sister, Nezuko. By the time our journey reaches the Infinity Castle, his mission is a true life-or-death battle across dimensions and against the fiercest demons.

This anime is a thrilling tale that is all at once heartwarming, heart-pounding, and heartbreaking, with plenty of humor and a wide range of interesting characters. From its animation to its storytelling, Demon Slayer is a true cut above the rest, and we know it will remain one of the most popular anime well beyond 2025.

Apothecary Diaries

Apothecary Diaries continues to charm the world as one of 2025’s best-loved anime. The latest season adds more depth to Maomao’s work of solving mysteries while discovering new ones in the midst of palace intrigue. Set in Tang Dynasty China, and as Maomao cynically knows well, the women of the Imperial Palace are just as complicated as the recipes and medicines she concocts for them and their care.

Apothecary Diaries isn’t just another period drama: it’s just what the court physician ordered (or at least, not the official one).

Kaiju No. 8

More battles, more suspenseful cliffhangers, more plot twists, and more monsters (and awards) from around the world are just a few of the reasons why this beast of an anime is one of 2025’s best, especially for scifi and dystopian genre fans.

If you’re like Kafka and caught the bug on this fandom, we won’t fight you on it, but we will encourage you to check out the merch you can “sweep!”.

My Hero Academia: The Final Season

Animation brings a new breath of creativity and originality into stories and thought-provoking ideas that inspire us to play, ponder, and indulge in flights of fancy. The freedom that artists get to create, and viewers to imagine alongside, it’s a huge reason why anime kept getting popular in 2025.

It’s bittersweet that school’s out for My Hero Academia after eight incredible seasons having us wish all things didn’t have to come to an end. We’ve come to know and love so many solid and unforgettable characters like Bakugo, Tomura Shiragaki, and of course, Izuko Midoriya, or Deku. My Hero Academia isn’t just one of the best anime of 2025, it might just be one of the best ever made to date.

Dan Da Dan

Like My Hero Academia, Dan Da Dan is an instant classic that quickly became one of the most popular anime ever. 2025’s season continues the story of Momo, Okaron, and plenty more run-ins with the occult, other dimensions, and other typical teenage adventures.

Dan Da Dan is able to simultaneously balance being funny, bizarre, and provocative, and suspenseful in a very binge-worthy way. We’re not saying it was the aliens, but we are saying there are so many reasons that fans have connected with the series and added it to their own overall top picks.

Umamusume: Cinderella Gray

A horse of a different color in the anime world, Umamusume is one the best of 2025 because it shows how everything can get more magical in two dimensional form. Cinderella Gray is a new series altogether in the popular anime, just as in 2025, Umamusume: Pretty Derby, won major awards for its mobile game!

Fun and games aside, Umamusume, which translates to “horse girls,” features race horses reincarnated as girls with tails, manes, and other horselike features while living alongside humans and working towards their dreams. In fact, in most cases, the umamusume represent real-life race horses!

Umamusume is one of the best anime in 2025 for anyone who could use a boost of joy, as it’s full of endearing characters you can’t help but cheer for along, exciting animation, and delightful plotlines. Fans agree too, as its debut season was lauded by some sources as anime of the quarter!

Choose the Best Anime of 2025

At Plaza Japan, we’ve been in the business of providing authentic and uniquely Japanese anime merchandise for over two decades, which means we’ve been witnesses to anime’s amazing Sailor Moon-style transformation. Anime has come a long way, but one of the biggest was simply that more people are finding shows that speak to them. What once was a somewhat niche interest both in Japan and abroad is now more mainstream and popular than ever. We love to see it, literally!

Speaking of things we love to see, what were your best anime of 2025? Let us know in the poll below, and make sure to keep up to date with all the latest releases for new favorites for 2026!

Ideas for storing and displaying, and how to best enjoy your model kit building hobby

There has never been a better time to start getting into hobby building, and Japan is at the heart of it all, with a plethora of plastic model kits that are as fun to build as they are to show off. But where to begin, and what do you need for model kits you’ll be proud to display?

First, one of the hallmarks of Japanese model kits is that they all include easy-to-follow step-by-step guides. While most come in multiple languages, like English, the directions are primarily visual to best guide the builder. For the rest? That’s where Plaza Japan comes in: as experts in Japanese merch, we have everything you need. Explore our guide on how to build model kits of all kinds!

What You Need for Any Model Kit

Before we tackle specifics for certain brands, model kit types, and how to build them, there are a few essential tools you’ll always need. They include:

A well-lit, dedicated workspace. Some avid builders also invest in special LED lighting to spot the finer details.

Cutting mat

Clippers - and ideally, one for the “first snip” off the sprue, and others like God Hand for the more delicate snips to remove the excess residue.

Edge cutters and hobby knives (and don’t lose their protective caps and covers!)

Hobby filers in a variety of different textures

Also, some, but not all, kits require glue, and sometimes it’s a builder’s preference to use it anyway; just make sure the glue is formulated specifically for plastic model kits. For example, Tamiya not only makes amazing plastic model kits but also has glues considered among hobbyists' gold standards.

Train for your Building Hobby

Model trains and Japan go together like nori and rice, and they remain among our most popular offerings. When it comes to building a locomotive model kit, there are a few things you’ll have to keep in mind at the onset: first, the scale you’ll be committing to, the scene you’re setting, and, of course, the layout of your tracks. We invite you to explore the rest of our blog for even more advice on model trains!

For the time being, what do you need for these kinds of model kits? In addition to the above, plan on acquiring:

Needle files

Gauge measuring tools

Hobby pliers

Screwdrivers

After that, choose your favorite kits, pull up to your station, and start getting on track. Because model trains literally have a lot of moving parts, make sure to keep them running with regular cleaning and maintenance!

Planes and Automobiles

Instead of trains, are planes and automobiles more your speed? If so, Japanese model cars will definitely up your cool factor, and unique Japanese aircraft will take your displays to new heights.

For these model kits, what do you need besides the basics?

Micro drill bits and putty to securely attach the minuscule pieces

Model kit glues for slightly larger pieces

Primer and decals for any additional enhancements

Some also invest in airbrush kits for even more well-coated paints

Win the Battle with Epic Military Kits

People enjoy the creativity that goes into recreating historic scenes, and others are drawn to learning how to build model kits of military vehicles, for personal reasons. Look for brands like Fujimi model kits for some of the best replicas from around the world and across eras.

Many of the tools are standard to any plastic kit building; most of what we want to highlight is how to enhance them. If you desire an aesthetic that is more battle-hardened than ready for its victory parade, you’ll definitely want to look into how to weather your model kit in addition to building it!

For weathering model kits, you’ll do well to snag brushes, sponges, and acrylic paints specifically designed for painting plastic kits, along with dry brushes for extra customization.

Mech it Up as You Go

What about those classic Japanese model kits, like Gundam and anime figures? Fortunately, Japan’s model kits have become worldwide classics not only because of their cool designs, but also because all you need to build them are basic tools.

However, to make your Gundam truly take wing, further enhance your kits with a selection of kit accessories like decals, along with tweezers to delicately slide them on.

Slay with an Awesome Display

We’ve highlighted some of the ways for how to build scenes for your model kits, but truly, the best ideas will come from your own sense of fun! Our selection of train accessories, such as people, animals, plants, and buildings, can come in handy. Additionally, consider displaying with anime action figures to establish a theme, declare a fandom, or even retell a story!

However you do it, just make sure to protect your creations on secure shelving, desks, or display cases, and keep them away from direct sunlight.

What You Need Most for Model Kits: A Sense of Fun

This gets us to the most important tool for building a model kit with confidence: your sense of fun! After all, it’s completely normal to make mistakes, and every hobby builder will have at least one silly story of a missed step, a slipped-up cut, a piece that mysteriously vanished, or a paint spill. Some even keep building journals for that reason.

Ultimately, hobby building is about practice and patience, which is why having a sense of humor and not taking things too seriously is your recipe for a good time. So go ahead, get a snack, put on your favorite music, and get into that satisfying rhythm of clipping, filing, and snapping.
