About the JASDF F-104J Fighter “Senkyō” (Combat Competition)
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force held combat skill competitions involving entire units—not only fighter pilots but also air traffic controllers—to improve operational proficiency. In the 1980s, as dissimilar air combat training with the F-4EJ intensified, many F-104s appeared in “special paint schemes” that went beyond standard camouflage. Their distinctive appearances captivated aviation enthusiasts.
This kit includes markings to recreate aircraft from the 202nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (1980 competition) and the 207th Squadron (1984 competition). Notably, the 202nd’s aircraft featured a unique paint scheme resembling the “maritime camouflage” later adopted by the F-2, making it a standout presence.
About the Kit
With completely new tooling, the fuselage is divided along panel lines for ease of assembly and precision finish. The razor-sharp wings and air intakes are molded to extreme thinness, faithfully capturing the look of the real aircraft.
