Frequently Asked Questions
Not sure where to start with model train building? Have questions about Z scale buildings? This FAQ is here to help.
What is Z scale?
Z scale is one of the smallest model scales available in today’s model train market. They’re built to a 1:220 scale, meaning that it would take 220 train cars lined up end-to-end to reach the length of one real train car.
What’s the difference between Z scale and N scale?
Z scale is smaller than N scale — while N scale is 1:160, Z scale is 1:220. Both are on the small end of the scale model spectrum.
Would Z scale structures work with an N scale train?
Most builders choose trains and environment pieces (like structures, settings, signs, and people) in the same scale as their train in order to make their models as lifelike as possible. While you could theoretically pair Z scale structure with an N scale train, you’ll likely prefer the aesthetic consistency of using the same scale for your train and its environment.
Why choose Z scale models over another scale?
There are two main reasons why builders opt for Z scale trains and environments:
- Size efficiency: If you have limited building space, you might like Z scale models — they don’t take up as much space, and offer opportunities for intricate builds in small areas.
- Availability: Z scale products are widely available in today’s model train products market, making them an accessible scale for new builders and veteran hobbyists alike.
