About the U.S. Navy F-14A Tomcat™ “Bombcat”
In the late 1990s, the F-14 gained nighttime strike and targeting capabilities through the integration of the LANTIRN pod. Replacing traditional missiles, smart bombs were mounted under the fuselage, marking its evolution into an attack aircraft. During the Afghanistan War that began in 2001, the F-14 carried out missions under harsh conditions, with no nearby allied airbases. Its long range and flexible operational capacity proved invaluable. The variable-geometry wings (VG wings) provided excellent low-altitude performance and high payload capacity, allowing it to fulfill its role as a precision bomber and conclude its combat history with distinction.
Kit Contents
This kit reproduces the markings of VF-154 “Black Knights” shortly after their return from Afghanistan to Japan in 2003. Although the unit transitioned to the F/A-18F and returned to the U.S. shortly thereafter, this aircraft remains memorable as “the last F-14 seen in Japan.” A newly tooled bomb rack under the fuselage is included.
