The DD51 locomotives inherited by JR West have seen reduced use after the end of passenger services, but several remain in service today for construction trains and for towing trains entering and leaving depots.
In the 2020s, air conditioning was installed, one side cab window was filled in, and an air duct was added, giving the locomotives an updated appearance.
