The ED79 Series 50 locomotives were manufactured by JR Freight starting in 1989 for increased freight operations on the Tsugaru Strait Line between Aomori Signal Station and Goryokaku. Unlike the modified ED79 type from the traditional ED75 series, these locomotives featured a distinct paint scheme. The front windows were slanted upward, and equipped with icicle cutters (visors) above the windows, giving them a different appearance.
Typically operated in pairs, these locomotives were used for hauling freight trains, characterized by the consistent use of only the Hakodate-side pantograph, regardless of the direction of travel.
Even after the appearance of the EH500 series, which could travel directly through the Seikan Tunnel in 2000, they remained in service. However, they were replaced by the dual-voltage EH800 series introduced in anticipation of the Hokkaido Shinkansen opening, retiring in 2015.
