The EF64-1000 is a DC electric locomotive designed for gradient lines, introduced in 1980 to replace older electric locomotives on the Takasaki and Joetsu lines. The 1001 unit was assigned to the Takasaki Rolling Stock Center during the privatization of Japanese National Railways and was actively used for event trains in its distinctive brown color with white stripes.
In 2017, it was restored to the original JNR colors and grey H rubber, and continued service until its retirement in November 2024 with the removal of the electric heating lamp in 2022.
