Among the EF64-1000 series, locomotives from unit 1033 onward were modified for freight train use, resulting in the removal of electric heating units, some jumper plugs, and roof ventilators. The final additional units, units 1051–1053, were based at the Nagaoka Train Center after the privatization of Japan National Railways, where they played an active role in pulling sleeper trains. However, units 1052 and 1053 were later transferred to the Takasaki Train Center, with unit 1053 remaining in service until November 2024.
