The ED79 series was introduced as a locomotive used in the Seikan Tunnel, which opened in 1988. It is a modified version of the ED75-700 series to accommodate the continuous gradients and increased speed demands within the tunnel, along with safety equipment specifically designed for the Seikan Tunnel. In later years, inspection openings on the sides were sealed, and from 2010, the pantograph on the second end was replaced with a single-arm type.
