The EF64 is a DC electric locomotive designed for steeply sloping railway lines, introduced in 1964. The Type EF64-0 units owned by JR East received externally mounted taillights when ATS-P was installed, and head mark stays were added to the units assigned to the Takasaki Train Center. From 2009 to 2010, EF64 No. 37 and No. 38 were transferred to the Nagaoka Train Center and were used to haul the Akebono sleeper express.
