The type KIHA 16 is a diesel railcar introduced in 1954, derived from the type KIHA 45500 and a type KIHA 17 car without a toilet. It was mainly used on local services in formations with type KIHA 17, KIHA 20, KIHA 30, KIHA 55, and KIHA 58 cars.
Because of its narrow body width to reduce weight and low seat back height, passenger amenities were inferior to the type KIHA 55 and later trains. As the cars deteriorated over time, they were replaced by the type KIHA 40 and were retired by around 1980.
High Grade (HG) specifications:
- Single-sided push-in ventilator located just behind the driver's cab
- Two-part handrail next to the crew door and a short group of handrails next to the passenger door
- Headlight prisms that do not turn black when not lit
- Jumper hoses reproduced in three dimensions using separate parts
- Head and taillights equipped with a constant lighting circuit board and an ON-OFF switch
- Headlights illuminated by incandescent LEDs and taillights by red LEDs
- H-rubber reproduced in gray
- Seats reproduced in blue
- Selectable car number with transfer sheet included
- Headlights reproduced as single-lamp type; two-lamp type can also be assembled using included parts
- Uses a conventional current collection system and black wheels
- TN coupler (SP) is standard equipment
- Compatible with interior lighting kit TOMIX 0734
