The Kiha 100 diesel car was introduced in 1990 to replace the Kiha type 20 and Kiha type 45. Four prototype cars were built first, followed by an improved mass-produced first batch in 1991 and a second batch later that year featuring modified skirt shapes and other updates. The Kiha type 100 operated mainly on the Ofunato Line, Kitakami Line, Yamada Line, Kamaishi Line, and Ominato Line. The Kiha type 100 is being replaced by the Kiha type 110 and will retire from the Ofunato Line with the March 2025 timetable revision. Prototype and first-generation trains are also being retired at the same time.
