The Kiha 100 diesel car was introduced in 1990 to replace the Kiha type 20 and Kiha type 45. After four prototype cars, four improved mass-produced cars (first batch) were built in 1991, followed by a second batch that featured modified skirt shapes and other refinements. These cars were mainly used on the Ofunato Line, Kitakami Line, Yamada Line, Kamaishi Line, and Ominato Line. They are being replaced by the Kiha type 110 and will retire from the Ofunato Line with the March 2025 timetable revision. Prototype and first-generation cars are also being retired at the same time.
