The KIHA 40 series 500 has a double driver's cab and was introduced as a cold-climate vehicle for the Tohoku region. The Hachinohe Transport District's KIHA 40-500 cars were painted white with a red stripe and mainly operated on the Tsugaru Line and Hachinohe Line before being retired in 2018.
