The KUMOHA 40 Series is a train with driving cabs at both ends, introduced in 1932, and was the first 20-meter class electric railcar by the Railway Ministry. Initially used for train set expansions in the Tokyo metropolitan area, such as the Chuo and Sobu Lines, it was later utilized in regional lines for local transport in areas like the Ome, Itsukaichi Lines, and Takasaki region during the 1950s onward.
