In 2024, the Shimokita Line (nicknamed the "Shimokita Seaside Line"), operated by JR Bus Tohoku and connecting Tanabu – Ominato Station – Kawauchimachi – Wakinosawa Town Hall, marks the 80th anniversary of its opening as a Ministry of Railways-operated bus service in 1943. Originally, the line began operations between Tanabu and Kawauchimachi, and from Kawauchimachi to Mutsu-Wakinosawa.
To commemorate this milestone, JR Bus Tohoku has introduced a "JNR Revival Bus" operating out of the Ominato Branch, which manages the Shimokita Line. This bus features a headmark and emblem replicating those used during the Japanese National Railways (JNR) era.
Inside the bus, a special display has been curated by volunteer staff from the Ominato Branch. Posters showcase valuable historical materials such as the Shimokita Line timetable from the JNR era and scenes from towns along the route during the 1960s when buses were operated by two-person crews. Also on display are items like original round bus stop signs and informational boards once used on the now-discontinued "Abejo Line" (Kawauchimachi – Yunokawa Onsen), all evoking a nostalgic look back at the past.
