The Series 227, a commuter train that began operation in 2015, is primarily used for local and rapid service in the Hiroshima area. The train features a distinctive red color, inspired by the torii of Itsukushima Shrine and the maple tree, which is the prefectural tree of Hiroshima. It sports the "Red Wing" nickname and the "Hiroshima City Network" logo.
As of January 2025, there are 63 sets of 3-car formations and 42 sets of 2-car formations in active service.
- Front end design renovated according to Series 225 A Seat, Series 521, and Series 323
- The prototype of the train replicates the late-model appearance
- The front display section is replaceable, equipped with pre-printed parts, and includes additional replacement parts
- The anti-collision hood for the lead car is a separate part and includes two types: one for leading and one for coupling
- "Red Wing" logo and JR mark are pre-printed
- White LED for head and tail lights, while the fog lights simulate yellow illumination using a color prism
- Head and tail lights and the front display section are equipped with a constant-on lighting board with an on-off switch
- The lead car driver's side is equipped with TN coupler (SP)
- Car numbers are selectable with transferable sheets (included in the basic set)
- New power collection system and silver wheels adopted
