The series 401 is an AC/DC commuter train developed for the Joban Line in 1960. Initially built with a low driver's cab, cars from number 23 onward received a raised cab similar to the series 153. Until the mid 1980s, before being repainted in a white body with blue stripes, these trains were affectionately known along the line as the red trains due to their standard AC/DC Red No. 13 paint scheme.
High Grade (HG) model specifications:
- Add-on set without a powered car
- Faithful reproduction of the JNR series 401 with the leading car KUHA 401 featuring a high driver's cab in the standard AC/DC Red No. 13 (rose pink) livery
- Accurately reproduces the leading car overall length and door cock position, which differ from the series 113-0
- Joban radio antenna includes molded piping and comes with the separate antenna part already installed
- Voltage detection antenna on the front roof fitted with a conical base; a square base option can be installed using the included replacement parts
- The bridge board on the KUHA 401 front through door is a separate part; choose large or small
- MOHA series 400 underfloor reproduces the main transformer layout characteristic of AC/DC trains
- Head and tail lights plus front display use a constant lighting circuit and include an ON-OFF switch
- Head and tail lights and front display are illuminated by incandescent color LEDs
- Front display uses a color prism to achieve a white-like color
- Interchangeable front display includes pre-printed parts labeled "Normal (white)" and "(white)"
- Selectable car number with transfer sheet included
- New current collection system and black wheels
- TN coupler (SP) is standard equipment
