The KIHA 143 type is a diesel railcar modified from the series 50 type 51 passenger car introduced in 1994, featuring an enhanced drive system based on the similar KIHA 141 type.
It was formed as a three-car set with a KISAHA 144 intermediate trailer and operated in the Sapporo area coupled with KIHA 40, KIHA 141 and KIHA 142 on the Sapporo-Numazu Line.
