The Niigata Rail Center's K Formation is a train set featuring interior dimming equipment and the ATS-P system for entry into the Tokyo metropolitan area, presented in the JNR limited express colors. It was prominent in night express operations such as the "Moonlight Echigo" between Shinjuku and Niigata, as well as the express "Noto" following the retirement of the 489 series from Kanazawa operations. The K1 formation continued to operate on services like the "Hokuetsu" limited express and "Kubikino" rapid after its retirement from the night train schedule, until its withdrawal in March 2015 when these trains were abolished.
