The Express "Hamanasu" was a night express train connecting Aomori to Sapporo, introduced in March 1988 with the opening of the Tsugaru Strait Line. By 1997, the train included B sleeper cars, dream cars, and carpet cars, typically composing a 7-car set. During peak travel seasons, the train could be extended to a maximum of 12 cars by adding extra B sleeper and seating cars.
