The express train "Hamanasu" debuted in March 1988, coinciding with the opening of the Tsugaru Kaikyo Line, and operated as an overnight express connecting Aomori and Sapporo. By 1997, B sleeping cars, dream cars, and carpet cars were added, forming a basic seven-car composition, which expanded to a maximum of 12 cars during peak periods with additional B sleeping and seating cars.
