"Akebono" was a sleeper express train that ran between Ueno and Aomori. The train originally ran via the Tohoku Main Line, and after the opening of the SHINKANSEN in 1997 its route was changed to the Joetsu Line, Shinetsu Main Line, and Uetsu Main Line. It continued to operate as a regular train until March 2014. In addition to three private sleeping cars, the formation included Goron and Seat cars and Ladies Goron and Seat cars that could be used with a regular ticket or a reserved seat, creating a unique and varied consist.

- KANI series 24-100 shows the gold stripe and reproduces No. 112 of the engine-renewed car.
- Conductor’s compartment side of the OHANEFU series 25-200 is pre-fitted with a TN coupler. A replacement TN coupler is included for the KANI 24-100 conductor’s compartment side.
- Tail lights and train markings are set up with a constant lighting board. The OHANEFU series 25-200 includes an ON-OFF switch.
- Tail lights and train markings are illuminated by white LEDs.
- Train markings include glass parts pre-printed with "Akebono."
- The middle gold stripe on the OHANEFU series 24-0 has no train marking and no light board, for accurate era-specific detail.
- Bed parts are reproduced in light gray.
