The 205 Series is a commuter train that began operation in 1985.
The second batch of the 205 Series was added in 1985, during the final years of the Japanese National Railways, as the first mass-produced vehicles. This group was altered from the two-tiered windows of the first batch to single sliding windows. The second batch includes formations from numbers 5 to 22, characterized by the staggered placement of the steps at the connection surfaces. From the third batch onward, these steps were modified to be vertically aligned in two columns.
Initially, the MOHA204 type had all units equipped with BLMGs, but since the power supply capacity was adequate with two units per train, the BLMG from the MOHA204 type car in the fifth position was removed and reused in newly added cars of type MOHA204.
Subsequently, to alleviate congestion, the configuration was changed from 10 to 11 cars by adding a six-door SAHA204 type car to the formation.
Following its service on the Yamanote Line, the train underwent modifications after 2002 for repurposing to replace older trains on other lines and was transferred accordingly.
