The series E231-500 started operations in April 2002 as a replacement for the series 205 ahead of the D-ATC implementation on the Yamanote Line. This train was the first in the Tokyo Metropolitan area under JR to feature LCD screens for information displays, installed above each door.
To alleviate congestion, six-door cars, previously attached to the 10th car, were additionally integrated into the 7th car, making two six-door cars in the formation. Beginning in 2010, with the installation of platform doors at stations, the existing six-door cars were phased out, and new SAHAE231 four-door cars were incorporated into the 7th and 10th cars.
Starting in 2015 with the introduction of the new series E235, these cars began their transition to the Chuo-Sobu Line, completing the transition by January 2020.
