The series E231-500 trains commenced operations in April 2002, designed to replace the series 205 trains ahead of the introduction of D-ATC on the Yamanote Line. These trains were the first in the JR Tokyo metropolitan area to feature LCD information display panels, positioned above each door. As part of measures to alleviate congestion, the 6-door cars previously connected to the 10-car unit were additionally attached to the 7-car unit, resulting in two 6-door cars per train set.
In 2010, with the installation of platform doors at each station, the existing 6-door cars were replaced. Newly manufactured 4-door SAHAE231 models were incorporated into both the 7-car and 10-car units. Starting in 2015, with the introduction of the new series E235 trains, the transfer of these models to the Chuo-Sobu Line began, with all units replaced by January 2020.
