The 223 series 2000 sub-series is a suburban train that debuted in 1999 to replace the 113 and 117 series trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo main lines. Based on the 1000 sub-series with cost reductions, over 600 cars were manufactured by 2008, making it the most prominent series.

- Around 2015, fall prevention hood installation began on the lead cars, route number displays were removed, and wipers were added above the connecting doors on some cars.

- The fall prevention hood has been redesigned and newly manufactured, compatible with traditional products, and sold separately as parts <PP0813>.
- A newly manufactured coupler features a prepared installation part for two-level electric connections.
- The roofs of KUMOHA223, MOHA222, and MOHA223 forms reproduce a different appearance from the third batch.
- Front windows are green to reflect current replacement trends, while side windows replicate the smoke tint of the first batch.
- Equipped with a headlight function that lights up regardless of travel direction when lead cars are coupled.
- The obstacle deflector on the lead car has been extended at the bottom.
- The JR mark is pre-printed.
- The front display comes with pre-printed parts "A New Rapid Himeji" attached, with replacement parts included.
