The Series 287 "Kuroshio" is a train introduced to replace the Series 381, which operated in the Nanki region, and began service in March 2012. The "Kuroshio" primarily operates between Shirahama/Shingu and Shin-Osaka/Kyoto in formations of 6 or 9 cars.

- Newly designed TN couplers (SP) on the driver's cab side of the leading car

- The headlight below the driver's cab reproduces yellow and white illumination via a color prism
