The Series 14 200s are vehicles modified by JR West for wave transport. These improvements to the Series 14 seat cars include changes to seating and the installation of large luggage spaces, along with a new paint scheme.
The "Moonlight Kyushu" was an overnight rapid service train running between Kyoto (later Shin-Osaka) and Hakata, mainly operated during spring, summer, and the year-end/New Year period. Primarily utilizing the Series 14 200s from the Kyoto General Rolling Stock Depot, the train usually consisted of a six-car set with an observation car connected on the Kyoto side. In the summer of 2005, the train configuration changed to an eight-car set, and from the winter of 2006, it ran as an eight-car set without the observation car. The service was discontinued in the winter of 2009.
