The Ou Main Line between Fukushima and Akita crosses the challenging Itaya Pass, a steep 33‰ gradient section that was notorious in the era of locomotive haulage. Steam and early DC electric locomotives such as the 4100, 4110, E10, and EF16 handled this route until 1968, when the powerful AC electric EF71 was introduced for both freight and passenger service. Even after JR privatization, EF71 locomotives continued to haul series 50 passenger cars on local services until August 1991, when the line between Fukushima and Yamagata was regauged and Shinkansen through service began.
This model set is inspired by the historic Farewell Itaya Pass set and reproduces an EF71 paired with two OhaFu series 50 passenger cars. The set is presented in the same red paper box and sleeve as the original release and includes stickers of station nameplates and destination signs used on the series 50 cars. All trains are equipped with TN couplers.
