The 287 series "Kuroshio" was introduced to replace the 381 series operating in the Nanki region and began commercial operation in March 2012. The "Kuroshio" mainly operates between Shirahama/Shingu and Shin-Osaka/Kyoto in formations of 6 or 9 cars.

- The headlights located below the driver's cab are crafted to illuminate in yellow and white using a color prism.
- Equipped with a power unit with a flywheel.
- Features a new electrical collection system and silver wheels.
- Includes the M-13 motor.
