The 800 series of the DD51 locomotive, introduced for freight use, was notable for lacking steam heating equipment. Many of the units inherited by JR East were used at the Takasaki Depot to haul freight trains on the Hachiko Line.
From the 1990s onward, these locomotives were primarily active with work trains and event trains but were completely retired from service in November 2024.
