The KIHA type 48-500 was built for cold climates, featuring side windows that drop at the top and rise at the bottom, and DT44 air spring bogies. It was mainly used in the Tohoku region, with many trains also deployed in the Chubu region. The KIHA 48 trains of the Hachinohe Transport District were painted in Morioka colors—white with a red stripe—and operated on the Hachinohe Line and Tsugaru Line until 2016.
