The type KIHA 40-500 features a double driver's cab and was introduced as a cold-climate vehicle for the Tohoku region. Units adapted for one-man operation on the Ominato Line had the area around the front windows painted red, earning the nickname Red Demon. After the introduction of the type KIHA 100, these trains were used like standard trains and remained in service until 2018.
