The 12 series passenger car, introduced in 1969, is characterized by its express style with blue body and two white stripes, featuring dual unit sash windows. The 12 series cars from the JR East Gunma Railway Center are actively used in a variety of event trains and lend their services beyond the Takasaki area throughout the JR East region.
The SUHAFU 12 models, numbers 149 to 163, are the final production cars with shared components from the 50 series passenger cars, leading to modifications such as the design of the corridors and rear observation windows, giving them a distinctive appearance.
