The series 201 is a commuter-type train that made its debut as the first chopper-controlled car for the Japanese National Railways in 1979. After energy-saving effects were proven, mass production began in 1981. The train was initially introduced to replace the series 101 and 103 on the Chuo Line. Depending on the operations of the line, two variants were deployed: a split formation of 4 cars + 6 cars, and a through formation of 10 cars. By 1985, the transition to the series 201 was completed with the retirement of the last series 101.
After privatization in 1993, modifications including the installation of obstacle deflectors and front electric destination indicators were made, significantly changing the appearance of the front compared to earlier models. From 2000, to address snow conditions, the pantographs of the fixed 10-car formations were replaced with single-arm PS35C type. The replacement of the series 201 with the subsequent series E233 began in 2005, leading to the retirement of the 10-car through sets in 2008 and the split formations by 2010.
