One significant event during this period was Operation Oxenkopf from February 26 to March 4, 1943. This battle represented one of the final confrontations between German and Allied forces and was considered the last organized combat by the German forces in North Africa. The 501st Heavy Tank Battalion, among the first to be equipped with Tiger I tanks, played a pivotal role in the battle around Sidi Nsir, Tunisia. The British countered the powerful Tiger I with 25-pounder guns and Churchill tanks, resulting in significant losses for the German side and eventual retreat.
