The "Green Yamanote Line" is a hot topic these days. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the green 103 Series on the Yamanote Line.
The E231 Series "Green Yamanote Line Wrapping Train," reminiscent of the original, is now popular, and this nostalgic 103 Series train formation is being revived. Introduced in 1963, the 103 Series became the largest group of trains manufactured by the Japanese National Railways (JNR), with nearly 3,500 cars manufactured, and played a key role in supporting commuter transportation in Japan during the period of rapid economic growth.
In 1972, mass-produced air-conditioned cars were introduced, contributing to the improvement of the commuter environment on the Yamanote Line (green), a major artery of the Tokyo metropolitan area. While its useful life was short-lived due to the introduction of high-cab cars with the introduction of ATC, we are pleased to present this nostalgic train formation, featuring the low-cab KuHa 103 lead car.
Additionally, "ATC preparation (construction) cars" refer to high-cab cars that can be fitted with ATC equipment. In 1974, in anticipation of the introduction of ATC on the Yamanote Line, these lead cars were designed to be able to be fitted with ATC equipment in the future. They have a high cab structure to improve visibility and ensure safety in the event of a crossing accident, and are characterized by a long, narrow front window, additional wipers, and a stainless steel band below the window.
