The 489 series in Hakusan livery was introduced by JR West in 1988 (Showa 63) during the renewal of the limited express “Hakusan,” which connected the Hokuriku region with the Tokyo metropolitan area. Departing from the traditional JNR express colors, the new scheme featured an oyster white base accented with rose, pale ultramarine, and light cobalt blue.
Car No. 6, MoHa 489, was partially remodeled into a lounge and convenience car, resulting in a slight change to its window layout.
Even after the discontinuation of the “Hakusan” service in October 1997 (Heisei 9) due to the opening of the Nagano Shinkansen, the train continued to operate on Hokuriku Main Line express services and the “Noto” express. It remained in service until 2002 (Heisei 14), when it was repainted back into the original JNR express colors, having been beloved for 14 years.
