In 1988, in conjunction with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido, the sleeper express "Hokutosei" began operating between Ueno and Sapporo. It was a popular luxury sleeper express, offering deluxe-oriented service. This train, introduced in 2008, is a mixed train consisting of carriages belonging to JR Hokkaido and JR East. Cars 1-6, including the lobby and B-class private cabins, are JR Hokkaido cars, while cars 7-11, centered around the dining car (Grand Chariot) and A-class private cabins, as well as the power car, are JR East cars. While it continued to serve as one of the few overnight sleeper express trains, regular service ended in March 2015 due to preparations for the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen. It was then converted into a special train and operated until August of the same year.
