Legend Collection Vol. 8 features the 711 series AC suburban train — a key milestone in the modernization of Hokkaido’s railways.
The actual train was Japan National Railways’ first AC electric train, with pre-production units appearing in 1967 (Showa 42) and mass production beginning the following year. It began service on the Hakodate Main Line, which had just opened AC electrification between Otaru and Takikawa, marking the first JNR electric train in Hokkaido.
Though classified as a suburban type due to its semi-cross seat interior, the 711 series featured a two-door body with vestibules similar to express trains. It operated not only on local services but also on express routes such as “Kamui” (Otaru–Asahikawa) and the nonstop express “Sachikaze” (Sapporo–Asahikawa), the latter known for its speed rivaling limited express trains of the time.
