Non-air-conditioned cars are now part of the renewed KATO KiHa 58 series lineup.
In the late 1950s to early 1960s, KiHa 58 series diesel express trains began operating between urban centers and regional branch lines. The multi-section express trains “Iide” and “Zao” departed Ueno and traveled down the Tohoku Main Line, splitting at Koriyama — “Iide” continued to Niigata via the Banetsu West Line, while “Zao” headed further north on the Tohoku Main Line and connected to Yamagata via the Ou Main Line from Fukushima.
The “Zao” formation included KiHa 58 series 800 variants in school excursion colors. Mixed formations of non-air-conditioned KiHa 58 cars — including the 0, 400, and 800 series — can now be faithfully recreated.
