The series E657 debuted in 2011 as an AC/DC limited express train for the Joban Line and remains a mainstay limited express vehicle. For the 2023 Ibaraki Destination Campaign, E657 sets received revival paint inspired by the classic series E653 "Fresh Hitachi," attracting attention from rail fans and the public. Five color variations were produced in reality, and KATO now releases the blue K1 formation as the fourth item in its lineup.
This model is recommended for collectors building the ongoing five-color series and pairs well with other JR East rolling stock operating within the same area, including vehicles active north of Haranomachi and in the Sendai area. It also complements upcoming KATO releases such as the series E721 sets scheduled for April 2026.
