The EF81 locomotive, during its prime with the sleeper express "Hokutosei," donned a distinct "Hokutosei color" featuring a large shooting star on its red body. Notably, unit number 81 was the only one with silver decorations, having originally been used for the royal train service. At the Tabata Depot, its use was not confined to hauling the "Hokutosei" but extended to pulling other sleeper express trains like "Akebono" and "Cassiopeia," as well as temporary and freight trains, showcasing its versatility. Since August 2014, it has been restored to "Red 13" (Rose Pink) for ceremonial uses and continues to be in operation.
